To see if they are understanding what they have read you could ask them the order of what happened in the story, who the characters were (if any), what they liked about the story, etc. We want to ensure that the students are understanding what they are reading. We are teaching them about "Checking for Understanding" and they should be able to tell you about it. We have taught them to go back and reread any part of the book they are not understanding or remembering.

Our class has been practicing a poem for our Remembrance Day service next week. I will also send a copy home, but I will put it here as well in case it gets lost.

Response to "In Flanders’ Fields"

In Flanders’ fields the conflict grew
The din the noise the cannons threw
Havoc let loose rages around
The death denouncing trumpet sound

The combat deepens on the brave
With rush to glory or the grave
Blood stains the earth where you lie
Blood-red the poppy blooms
In Flanders’s Fields

We have a promise we need to keep
To all in Flanders who lie asleep
We take the torch the poppy red
And wear in honour of our dead!

Have we learned the lessons taught?
For those who died was not for naught
In Flanders Field

Homework will be different this week. I am asking the students to make any corrections they need to on their math test and return the corrected test back to me on Thursday. I have gone over with them what I expected and for most it is just the wording when describing a pattern. For example: instead of saying add two each time, they should say: start at _ and then add two each time, or start at _ and increase/decrease by 2 each time. For L.A.-students can take home their spelling notebooks and write their spelling words in alphabetical order and then order them by the number of syllables in each word. They can just put them under the headings: 1 syllable, 2 syllables, etc. I did go over what I wanted them to do and drew a chart on the board to show them how to organize it.
  • Students went home with several notes today. One being a reading campaign that we are starting today. Parents can record the number of books students are reading at home and then send the booklet in to the school on Monday.
